There are programmes built on contrast, and others that seem conceived as one great narrative arc. This concert belongs to the second category. From the very first bars of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Kreutzer Sonata, one senses an almost theatrical tension: violin and piano do not merely converse, but seek one another, challenge one another, pursue one another through writing that still today retains something vertiginous. Classical form is pushed toward a new dimension — broader, more dramatic, more physical. With Johannes Brahms, the language changes profoundly, yet that search for balance between energy and structure remains intact. The Sonata op. 108 is perhaps one of his most intense chamber works: the piano never truly accompanies the violin, but becomes its complementary substance, shadow, breath and sonic density. Everything seems to arise from an inner urgency continuously restrained by the perfection of form. In the second half of the concert, the journey opens toward different colours. Camille Saint-Saëns brings elegance, brilliance and an almost instrumental cantabile in the most refined sense of the term, while Manuel de Falla introduces a more earthy and rhythmic tension, crossed by folk echoes, sudden flashes and atmospheres suspended between dance and memory.
Giuseppe Gullotta
Giuseppe Gullotta, piano
Giving unity to this itinerary are two performers of great personality. Aiman Mussakhajayeva, one of the most authoritative violinists on the international scene, combines expressive depth with absolute control of sound. Giuseppe Gullotta accompanies and shapes the musical discourse with rare chamber sensitivity, transforming the piano into space, resonance and the architecture of the narrative. In the fiftieth anniversary year of Ceresio Estate, this concert thus becomes a journey into the great European tradition of the sonata: a form capable of containing momentum, conflict, poetry and vision.
